Curriculum
The core of the academic program is oral and written language, reading and mathematics in the primary grades, with science and social studies taking on greater importance beginning in grade three. In grades 6 - 8, a departmental program is in place for instruction. Physical education, fine arts, technology, foreign language and library classes are also integral to the weekly curriculum for grades K - 8.
An advanced math program is available for students in grades 5 - 8 who meet the 94% requirement in Terra Nova and final grades and who give evidence of an above average IQ.
Religion and prayer, as taught in our school, is a way of life, not merely one other subject. The religion class lays the foundation for the formation of attitudes and the building of principles upon which the child will base his/her life.
Enrichment, remedial help and support of students with mild learning disabilities is available on a limited basis as determined by need and availability. SJS also offers a part-time Counselor.

History
On August 1956 a dream became a reality! This dream was St. James Catholic School. With a current enrollment of 517, St. James Catholic School provides a quality education for about 380 families in the Catholic community of Savannah, Georgia. And the dream continues!
Through the efforts of Bishop Thomas J. McDonough, the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Immaculate, PA, agreed to staff the school, newly built, on the grounds of St. James the Less Chapel. Four sisters arrived as the IHM pioneers to Savannah. St. James Catholic School opened in August of 1956 with 215 students. The dedication of the school and convent took place on January 13, 1957.
By 1960, it became evident that the school would need larger facilities. Construction began on the upper school, with eight classrooms, and the cafeteria. The cafeteria was used as a temporary church until the parish could build a permanent church. As enrollment continued to grow, two additional classrooms and a fine arts room were added in 1983. In 1994, after the construction of St. James Church, the administrative area and the cafeteria were redesigned and additional rooms were built to accommodate a science lab, a computer lab and bathrooms in the annex.
In 2001, St. James Catholic School expanded the size of the school library to include a media center. The new addition was named to honor Mrs. Kay Blanton, the school librarian from 1970 to 2000. Mrs. Blanton retired in May of 2000.
